Waist Hip Ratio (WHR)
Waist Hip Ratio (WHR)
shows the proportion of stored
body fats
around your hip and
waist.
This indicator of fat distribution is also relevant. Total body fat is not the sole indicator of weight-related problems.
This is calculated by dividing the waist measurement by hip measurement. You can use centimeters or inches in computing for the ratio. (Hip is the widest part of your butt.)
Ideal WHR for men is 0.95 or less.
Ideal WHR for women is 0.8 or less.
WHR = waist / hip (men <=0.95; women <= 0.8)
A person with high waist hip ratio is at high risk of having health problems like cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
What you need to remember is that the higher the value, the higher the risk it is for your health. If your WHR is higher than 1, it is very urgent for you to change your diet and lifestyle to improve your health.
Remember that this is one of several measures that you can use. A person with a healthy
weight
can have excess
body fats
and lack lean muscle mass in the body. Another helpful indicator is your body fat percentage.
Info bits: According to Heart and Stroke Foundation,
abdominal fats
can put you at increased risk for
heart disease,
high blood pressure,
and type-2
diabetes.
