Here are some ideas on how you can improve your healthy diet with complex carbohydrates: - Choose corn or whole grain tortillas, instead of flour tortillas.
- Use whole wheat or whole grain pasta / noodles, instead of refined white pasta / noodles.
- Go for whole grain bread. Leave the refined white bread on the shelf.
- Prefer unpolished rice over white rice.
- Snack on whole, fibrous fruits. Ignore those hotdogs, sweets, and glazed pastries.
- Pick yams over white potatoes.
- Get whole grain crackers, instead of butter crackers.
- Buy or bake pizza with whole grain pizza dough.
- When choosing muffins and similar pastries, select those made from whole grains, nuts, and berries, instead of white flour and sugars.
- Pick those with low sodium, zero trans fats, zero preservatives (especially sodium nitrite, which causes cancer), and zero additives (like monosodium glutamate [MSG]). Some products are labelled as healthy but have high sodium content, which is not good for your blood pressure.
