Avoid drinks that make you gain weight

You do your best to lose weight. You might go for certain drinks that make you gain weight. Especially when it’s hot, you get thirsty more often. You look for cool refreshments.

Some of these beverages give you extra calories and sugar. Some even give you unhealthy fats, chemical preservatives, and artificial sweeteners. Your body don’t need them, right?

Flavored water

You may want to change your routine once in a while and give your glass of water a boost of new taste. You opt for flavored water that’s sweet or carbonated. But you end up getting extra calories. You can also end up with artificial flavors, sweeteners, and colors. All these might just do more harm than good when you often have them.

If you want to add taste in your water, you can add fruit juices like lemon, lime, orange, or watermelon. When you’re out, just opt for bottled water with natural flavors. Make sure there’s no additive.

Nutritious water

You may see nutrient-enhanced water products. These are marketed as healthy due to added vitamins and minerals. Avoid these products if there added sugars.

You’re better off with ordinary water and getting your nutrients from fruits, vegetables, and good-quality food supplements.

Hydrating and energy drinks

There are many hydrating and energy drinks in the market today. Consume them only when you really need to be hydrated like after a work-out or in a hot day. Moderate your consumption especially if your beverage has lots of sweeteners. Avoid those that have artificial flavors and additives.

You can use hydrating beverages to make sure you have enough fluids for your body. Pick the one which is rich in potassium, which is significant in maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance in your body. The best hydrating drinks can replace your lost fluids with essential electrolytes, delivering powerful antioxidants and neutralize free radicals that cause fatigue and soreness.

Fruit drinks

Fruit juices are good but many bottled or canned fruit juices out in the market are loaded with sugars and calories. Stay away from them.

Opt for the unsweetened ones. Better yet, eat fruits and vegetables. This way, you maximize the benefits by getting more nutrients and fiber. They’re fresh, too!

Flavored coffees and teas

Are you “in”? Do you join your colleagues and friends to have a cup flavored coffee or tea? I’ve seen people who have gained weight having developed their habit of visiting their favorite coffee shop to get a boost of sweetened latte or milk-enriched tea.

Flavored or sweetened coffees are loaded with calories. What happened to plain old coffee? And adding milk to your tea simply throws away the many benefits you could get.

Soda or soft drinks

Always check the nutrient label of what you drink. 4 grams of sugar is 1 teaspoon.

A 355-ml can of pop contains 10 to 12 teaspoons of sugar! And people sometimes gulp more than one can. Soda is one of the reasons why countries, like the USA, have a high rate of obesity and diabetes.

Do you want to be part of that? I’m sure you don’t. So avoid these fattening sodas even if they say it’s “diet soda” or sugar-free. Some use artificial sugar.

Alcohol

Your body converts alcohol to body fats. Having too much alcohol can also increase your triglycerides ("blood fats"). This increases your risk of heart diseases and stroke.

Take good care of your health. Minimize or avoid alcohol.

What’s the best for you?

So what’s the best beverage for your body? Plain water!

You can also get lots of health benefits from green tea! They’re rich in antioxidants. They can even help you lose weight!

When you reach your ideal weight, stick to a healthy diet, regularly exercise, and have a healthy lifestyle for the rest of your life.
