Body Mass Index, BMI

The Body Mass Index or BMI is a standard weight assessment using weight and height. It estimates healthy ranges of weight for certain heights of people. It is one of the most common diagnostic tools to determine if a person is underweight, normal, overweight, obese, or morbidly obese.
Category BMI Range (kg/m²)
Severely underweight less than 16
Moderately underweight 16 - 16.99
Mildly Underweight 17 - 18.49
Normal 18.5 - 24.99
Overweight 25 - 29.99
Slightly Obese 30 - 34.99
Moderately Obese 35 - 39.99
Morbidly Obese 40 or higher

You can compute your BMI using this formula:

BMI = kg / m² = (weight in kilograms) / (height in meters)²

For example:

Weight = 65 kilograms

Height = 170 cm or 1.7 meters

Body Mass Index = 65 / (1.7 x 1.7) = 22.48

This falls within the ideal weight range.

However, a high value can be associated with serious health risks including obesity, heart disease, diabetes, cancer. Your BMI provides a helpful guideline for achieving the weight range that is healthiest for you.

Remember that this is one of several measures that you can use. A person with a healthy weight can have excess body fats and lack lean muscle mass in the body. So, another helpful indicator is the body fat percentage (BFP), which gives a more accurate assessment. Waistline, weight, and waist-hip ratio (WHR) are useful measurements you can use in your health journey.

6 feet Height 6 feet
230 pounds Weight 230 pounds
35 inches Waistline 50 inches
31.2 BMI 31.2
Slightly Obese BMI Category Slightly Obese
Normal BFP Category High Risk
Normal WHR Category High Risk

Here is a possible difference in the assessment between body mass index and body fat percentage. It's best to use BMI with other tools. Take note that bodybuilders, with their unique diet, have very low body fat percentage (BFP) which is normal. An average person with very low body fat percentage would be categorized as too thin.

Info bits: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), "Overweight and obesity lead to serious health consequences. Risk increases progressively as BMI increases. Raised body mass index is a major risk factor for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease (mainly heart disease and stroke), diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders (especially osteoarthritis), and some cancers like endometrial, breast, and colon."
